Lane County, Oregon reaches from the Cascade Mountains to the Oregon Coast, much of it stretching along the Willamette Valley. Cities in Lane County include Eugene, Florence, Oakridge and Springfield.
Oregon Coast
Perhaps the most popular destination along the coastal region of Lane County is the Florence area. Florence is known for being the playground of sand dune enthusiasts year round. Florence is the base for those outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy touring the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area located just to the south of Florence.
Other popular attractions in the Florence area include its historic district in Old Town, the docks, Mo's Restaurant, Heceta Head Lighthouse and Sea Lion Caves. With award-winning golf courses, specialty shops, natural areas and miles of sandy beaches, it's no wonder Florence is a popular Lane County destination.
Willamette Valley
The most expansive part of Lane County lies within the Willamette Valley, where rich, fertile soils grow crops, and grapes. The cities of Eugene and Springfield are located within the Willamette Valley, where the Willamette and McKenzie River meet. Eugene has been called the “World's Great City of the Arts and Outdoors” and this title is true. Eugene celebrates the arts and outdoors with festivities throughout the year. Home to the University of Oregon, many of these events and festivals are held on campus.
The Willamette Valley is known for its wines and Lane County is no exception. Lane County boasts its share of vineyards and wineries, from King Estate Winery to Benton-Lane Winery, LaVelle Vineyards and many more. Many wineries in Lane County are open daily, offering tours and wine tasting. The Art and the Vineyard festival celebrates art and wine each Fourth of July in Eugene.
McKenzie River Valley
One of the most beautiful areas of Lane County lies to the east of Springfield in the McKenize River Valley. Visitors travel from across the country to see the crystal clear waters of the McKenzie rush down the mountains. The McKenzie River Valley offers challenging golf courses such as the Tokatee Golf Club. White-water rafting trips are a favorite activity of many visitors to the area. Horseback riding, fishing, hunting, hiking and bird watching are other activities enjoyed along the McKenzie River.
Cascade Mountains
The majestic Cascade Mountains rise in the Eastern region of Lane County. Diamond Peak and Willamette Pass tower above. The Three Sisters can been viewed to the north. Salt Creek Falls, the 2nd highest waterfall in Oregon, is located just a few miles before Willamette Pass. The pure water of Waldo Lake makes it a popular camping destination during the summer months, with several campgrounds located at the lake. Water sports are the main attraction at the lake. During the winter, Willamette Pass draws large numbers of skiers and snowboarders to its slopes.
The diverse regions of Lane County make this part of Oregon a popular destination for travelers. From the sandy beaches to rushing river waters or majestic mountains, Lane County is a great place to visit.
