An introduction to Crater Lake, a National Park in Southern Oregon.

Crater Lake is one of the oldest National Parks in the United States. The lake was formed thousands of years ago, when the volcano known as Mount Mazama exploded into a sea of lava and ash and left a perfect bowl.

Over the years the water from the melting snows filled the crater. The bowl is so perfect that no water escapes, and no spring is needed to feed the lake. What remains is water so blue that it precisely reflects the sky and mountains surrounding the crater.

Getting to Crater Lake

Crater Lake is located in Southern Oregon. There are two entrances: the west entrance off of route 62, and the north entrance off of route 138. The west entrance is open all year, while the north entrance is only open during summer, due to heavy snow most of year.

Due to the high altitude of the park, many of the roads are subject to closure until May each year. At the highest elevation along the rim, the rim drive is impassable with snow usually until July.

The best time to visit is in summer, to take advantage of all the activities available. The park is most crowded in summer, with the majority of the half million visitors arriving them.

The spring, fall and winter seasons offer the chance to enjoy the park at its most serene, but lack of recreation opportunities. The fee for entering the park is $10 for passenger vehicle all year.

Crater Lake Amenities

After entering the park, stop at the visitor center for helpful information, including maps and an 18-minute video describing the history of the Crater Lake and the National Park. A short drive up the steep roads brings you to Rim Village.

Rim Village provides the first views of the great crater and spectacular mountains surrounding it. Of particular interest is Wizard Island, a large rock thrusting out the water near the village.

For tourist activities, there is a gift shop, café and lodge. During the brief summer months, there are boat rides on the lake. One of the highlights of the park is Rim Drive, a 33 mile road, which allows breathtaking views from all perspectives of the lake.

Also in Rim Village is the Lodge, with a fine restaurant. Reservations are needed well in advance of the summer months. Hiking is very popular in the warmer weather, and skiing and snowshoeing provide access to the park in winter.

The views and high altitude will take your breath away. Caution is advised when driving on the narrow roads or when hiking. The drop offs can be steep, and weather can deteriorate in a hurry. :

Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the United States and 7th deepest in the world. Its unique beginnings and the care taken to preserve its natural beauty make it truly one of the wonders of the west.
